Mark L. Schaffer

Mark L. Schaffer is a Senior Partner with Ashcraft & Gerel, LLP and was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Boston University as an undergraduate, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, magna cum laude, in 1967. He attended Georgetown University Law School and received his Juris Doctor degree in 1972.

Thereafter, Mr. Schaffer was admitted to the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars in 1972,  Bar of the United States Supreme Court in 1978, and later, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Mr. Schaffer is a member of the Client Security Trust Fund of the Bar of Maryland, the American Association for Justice, the District of Columbia Bar, the Maryland State Bar Association, the Trial Lawyers Association of Metropolitan Washington, DC, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and the Workers’ Injury Law & Advocacy Group.  For the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Mr. Schaffer served as 2nd Vice Chair from 1990 to 1992 for the Workers Compensation and Disability Section.

Mark L. Schaffer authored Chapter 7 of “The Defense Base Act and  War Hazards Compensation Act Handbook,” published by Lexis Nexis in 2008, with a new 2010 Edition.

Mr. Schaffer has been active in campaigning for legislation protective of workers’ rights. He has spoken to various groups over the years on the subject of workers’ compensation.

He served as an adjunct faculty member for The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) from 1980 to 1984.  He joined Ashcraft & Gerel, LLP in 1972 and concentrates his practice on Washington, DC workers’ compensation claims, Defense Base Act workers’ compensation cases, and international injuries.
