Stephen M. Gensemer

Stephen M. Gensemer, was born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He graduated with a double major in Political Science and History from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1999. From 1999 to 2002 Mr. Gensemer attended law school at The American University, Washington College of Law, in Washington, DC. While in law school, Stephen Gensemer served as Deans Fellow in research for Jamin Raskin, now a Maryland State Senator. In addition, Mr. Gensemer participated in a full year of Criminal Justice Clinic, where he worked half a year as a criminal defense attorney in Montgomery County and half a year with the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office. Mr. Gensemer also received a grant from the school’s Equal Justice Foundation for his work in the Alexandria Public Defenders’ office during the summer of 2001.

Since being admitted to the bar in 2004, Stephen Gensemer has worked almost primarily in the areas of personal injury and criminal defense. He has successfully represented hundreds of individuals who were injured or who have lost a family member as a result of someone else’s negligent acts. While he has successfully negotiated substantial settlements in many of his cases, Mr. Gensemer has extensive trial experience, trying approximately twenty five Circuit Court jury trials along with dozens of bench trials in Maryland’s District Courts. Mr. Gensemer has received dozens of favorable jury and court verdicts ranging from tens of thousands of dollars to a verdict in Prince George’s County Circuit Court of $10,000,000.00.

In addition to his personal injury work, Stephen Gensemer has extensive experience as a criminal defense attorney. He has represented dozens of individuals throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia facing a wide variety of criminal charges. Mr. Gensemer has successfully represented individuals charged with misdemeanors, such as minor traffic offenses, DUIs, drug possession, theft, and assault, as well as serious felonies, from high profile multiple murders, rapes, drug distribution, counterfeiting, robbery, burglary, and felony thefts. Stephen Gensemer has obtained verdicts of not guilty for many of his clients, including individuals whose charges consisted of murder, drug distribution, counterfeiting, armed robbery, theft, drug possession, assault, and traffic related offenses.

Stephen Gensemer is a member of the Maryland State Bar and the bar of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. He is also admitted to practice in the District of Columbia. He works out of Ashcraft & Gerel’s Rockville, Maryland Office.
