Pradaxa Found To Cause Severe Internal Bleeding

Pradaxa (dabigatran) is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim and prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation. Pradaxa is in a class of drugs called “direct thrombin inhibitors,” which work by thinning the blood.

The FDA approved Pradaxa for public consumption in October 2010. Since then, Pradaxa has been shown to cause severe internal bleeding and serious injury in some individuals. The RE-LY clinical trial, for example, found that up to 16.6% of Pradaxa users may experience some kind of internal bleeding and 3.3% of users may experience a “major bleed.” The study also found that the risk of internal bleeding from Pradaxa is especially pronounced in individuals over age 75. According to the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System, Pradaxa users accounted for over 500 reports of serious injury from internal bleeding in the first quarter of 2011. Pradaxa was initially developed as an alternative to other anti-stroke medications such as Coumadin (warfarin). Unlike Coumadin, however, there is no antidote for Pradaxa internal hemorrhaging.
