On March 28, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asked Novartis Pharmaceuticals to voluntarily stop selling Zelnorm (Tegaserod), a medicine used for the treatment of women with constipation related irritable bowel syndrome, (sometimes called IBS) and patients younger than 65 years of age with chronic constipation. The FDA has concluded that the benefits of Zelnorm (Tegaserod) no longer outweigh the risk, based on a recent finding of increased risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack (myocardial infarction) and stroke associated with use of the drug. Novartis, in what amounts, in effect, to a recall, has agreed to stop marketing the drug immediately.

Zelnorm (Tegaserod) is a prescription medication approved for short term treatment of women with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation and for patients under 65 years of age with chronic constipation. Throughout February and March 2007, Novartis reported to the FDA the results of a new safety analysis of 29 clinical studies of Zellnorm. The data from all the studies were combined to assess the chance of adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels. Over 11,600 patients treated with Zelnorm (Tegaserod) were compared to over 7,000 patients treated with placebo. The analysis showed that patients treated with Zelnorm had a higher chance of having heart attacks (myocardial infarctions), strokes and angina pectoris (severe chest pain) than did those who were treated with placebo. Thirteen Zelnorm treated patients (or .1%) had confirmed heart attacks, strokes or angina, and only one placebo-treated patient (or 0.01%) had symptoms of a stroke that went away without complication. The average age of patients in these studies was 43 years and most patients – 88% -- were women.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has issued a public health advisory recommending the following:

Zelnorm (Tegaserod) has also been linked to serious cases of ischemic colitis and other types of intestinal ischemia. In some cases, these adverse events have led to hospitalization, surgery and even death.
