How Volkswagen Cheated Emissions Tests
In the U.S., the government has regulations against auto manufacturers preventing them from selling vehicles that produce more than the legal limit of pollutants. By installing the secret software – called “defeat devices” – in its diesel vehicles, Volkswagen was able to cheat on emissions tests.
The software allowed vehicles to recognize when an emissions test was being performed based on factors such as:
- The position of the steering wheel
- The car’s speed
- The duration of the engine’s operation
- Barometric pressure
When the vehicle recognized these factors, its emission controls went into a “clean operating mode” that reduced the amount of pollutants the car released. This allowed the vehicle to pass the test but then switch back to an inefficient operating mode that emitted between 10 and 40 times the legal amount of pollutants.
How Volkswagen Was Caught
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency raised allegations after independent researchers questioned Volkswagen vehicles’ emissions. Volkswagen initially denied any wrongdoing but eventually admitted to installing the devices in roughly 500,000 Volkswagen and Audi vehicles between 2009 and 2015.
Affected vehicles include the:
- VW Diesel Jetta (2009-2015)
- VW Diesel Beetle (2009-2015)
- VW Diesel Passat (2009-2015)
- VW Diesel Golf (2009-2015)
- Audi Diesel A3 (2009-2015)
