How Volkswagen Cheated on Emissions Tests

In an effort to reduce and prevent air pollution, the U.S. enforces strict emissions testing to make sure that all vehicles on the road emit pollutants under the legal limit. Volkswagen was able to make it seem like its vehicles met emissions standards when, in actuality, the vehicles only performed at this standard during the official emissions test.

Volkswagen’s software – called “defeat devices” – allowed many of its diesel vehicles to reduce emissions when the software recognized that emissions testing was taking place. The vehicle’s computer could detect when a test was in session based on its steering wheel, its speed, the duration of the engine’s operation, and its barometric pressure. The vehicles could switch to a clean operating mode, temporarily reducing emissions and effectively passing the test. When the vehicles were not in clean operating mode, they would emit 10 to 40 times more than the legal limit of pollutants.

Allegations against Volkswagen

The EPA first raised allegations against Volkswagen in 2015 after independent researchers raised red flags. Volkswagen initially denied the allegations but did eventually admit to using the defeat devices. These devices were installed in roughly 500,000 Audi and Volkswagen vehicles in the U.S. between 2009 and 2015.

Affected models include:

  • VW Diesel Jetta (Model Years 2009-2015)
  • VW Diesel Beetle (Model Years 2009-2015)
  • VW Diesel Passat (Model Years 2009-2015)
  • VW Diesel Golf (Model Years 2009-2015)
  • Audi Diesel A3 (Model Years 2009-2015)
