Volkswagen’s “Defeat Devices”
Volkswagen has admitted to installing software – called defeat devices – that essentially helped the vehicles cheat on emissions tests. The device could detect when an official emissions test was being performed and switch to a more eco-friendly, clean operating mode in which the vehicle emitted fewer pollutants. This allowed vehicles to pass the test even though they emitted pollutants above the legal limit in day-to-day operations.
The EPA was the first to level accusations against Volkswagen after independent researchers raised questions about Volkswagen’s emissions. The company eventually admitted that defeat devices were installed in roughly 500,000 Volkswagen and Audi diesel vehicles between 2009 and 2015.
Affected vehicles include:
- VW Diesel Jetta (2009-2015)
- VW Diesel Beetle (2009-2015)
- VW Diesel Passat (2009-2015)
- VW Diesel Golf (2009-2015)
- Audi Diesel A3 (2009-2015)
