Two Programs for Benefits
There are two Social Security programs that offer benefits for disabled individuals: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Though they both offer disability benefits, these two programs are quite different.
Social Security disability insurance is offered to individuals under the age of 65 who have paid into Social Security by working and obtaining the required number of work credits.
Meanwhile, Supplemental Security Income is available to low-income individuals with disabilities who do not meet the recruitments for SSDI. SSI-eligible individuals must have an income that is less than the federal benefit rate (FBR). The FBR for 2019 is $771 per month for individuals and $1157 for couples. Eligible claimants must also have less than $2,000 in assets (or $3,000 for couples).
Medical Requirements for SSDI & SSI
To qualify for either program, you must be able to prove that you have an eligible disability. The Social Security Administration defines a disability as any severe mental or physical impairment that directly impacts a person’s ability to work and that lasts for at least one year.
Seek Legal Representation for Your Claim
Unfortunately, it is notoriously difficult to obtain Social Security disability benefits under either program. Many people are rejected upon their initial application, though many decisions are overturned upon appeal. Our experienced Social Security disability lawyers in Washington, D.C. can help you build a strong initial claim or an effective appeal depending on your situation.
